The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia by Ursula K. Le Guin

The dispossessed is one of those books that ends up changing your perspective on how you view the world and your place in it.  The plot focuses on a physicist who lives in the future where humans have colonized many planets and so much time has passed that different planets yield completely different types of humans or “aliens”. The story focuses on this man and his struggles with the political structures and societies of two different planets he lives on. The story is truly wonderful in that it tells a simple and relatable tale of one man’s experience but the book ends up being a social commentary through the messages and ideas that it portrays to readers. To anyone who is interested in sociology or politics this is a must read story as it portrays two different societies that have taken political ideas to extremes, and the circumstances that resulted can tell us a lot about our own society and politics. Ursula K. Le Guin masterfully deploys non chronological storytelling that simultaneously gives insight into our own socioeconomic position while also telling a futuristic and entertaining story.
