Imagine having your entire life planned out for you. Exactly where you were going to work, exactly where you were going to live, exactly who you would grow up to be. Sounds like a pretty limiting lifestyle, doesn’t it? Well, this is exactly how Jacob Portman feels in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. He knows that he is going to grow up and inherit his mother’s company, so he doesn’t even bother trying to change his life. But when strange, magical and utterly peculiar things start happening to him, he begins questioning if he could, just maybe, live the life he wants to live.

Jacob spent his childhood listening to his grandfather Abe Portman’s stories about his time in the Holocaust. Abe constantly talked about the monsters he faced, so Jacob assumed that he was talking about the Nazis. However, Jacob realizes that maybe there is another type of monster. A different type of monster. A type of monster that was after him.

Soon, Jacob starts finding other children like himself. Children with mysterious powers, each child with a different power. Children that make him feel accepted. Children that make him feel as if he belongs. He follows those children into a world that’s filled with monsters, magic, time travel, and secrets. So many secrets. Determined to unravel those secrets pertaining to his grandfather, Jacob plunges headfirst into this strange world.

Fans of fantasy, time travel, and mystery will all enjoy this splendid, magical and utterly peculiar adventure. With interesting characters, chilling vintage photographs (all authentic and taken with permission of the professional photograph collectors) and plot twists galore, this story will entertain pretty much anyone who dares to pick up this haunting book.
